Analysis: Jones hit .214 with 17 homers and 43 RBIs in 82 games with Texas this year while making 53 starts as the designated hitter, 12 in left field, five in right field and four at first base. A five-time All-Star who has slumped in recent years, Jones was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers in January and signed with the Rangers the following month. |

Analysis: McPherson is expected to compete for a starting job, and he provides Oakland with insurance at third base. Six-time Gold Glove winner Eric Chavez might not be able to return to that position after recovering from a second back surgery that cost him most of this season. The 29-year-old McPherson, who missed the 2007 and '09 seasons with back trouble, is a career .245 hitter with 18 home runs and 45 RBIs in parts of four major league seasons with the Angels and Marlins. |

Analysis: Pujols received all 32 first-place votes and 448 points in balloting announced Tuesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. It is the third MVP award for the St. Louis Cardinals star, who also won in 2005. He becomes the first unanimous MVP since Bonds in 2002. Pujols led the majors in home runs (47), runs (124), slugging percentage (.658) and intentional walks (44), and topped the NL in on-base percentage (.443). |

According to contract figures obtained by The Associated Press on Monday, Griffey's deal signed this month to return to his original team for one more season as a 40-year-old calls for a $2.35 million base salary for 2010. Analysis: Baseball's active home run leader would earn $3.9 million if he again has at least 400 plate appearances, Seattle has an increased home attendance of 2.5 million fans and Griffey again does not go on the disabled list while remaining on the roster for the entire season. Griffey earned $3.15 million in 2009. That included $2 million in base pay plus $1.15 million of a potential $3 million in bonuses. |

Yankees teammates Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter were second and third. Analysis: Mauer topped the AL in batting with a .365 average. He also led in on-base percentage and slugging percentage - two categories that have gained importance in recent years in judging production. |

Bruntlett got more playing time last year because of an ankle injury to shortstop Jimmy Rollins in April and because he was a late-inning defensive replacement for former left fielder Pat Burrell. |

The deal includes a $3.25 million option for 2011 that would become guaranteed if Hernandez plays in 120 games next season. If he plays in fewer, the Reds do not have the ability to exercise the option. Analysis: Hernandez played in only 81 games last season because of a knee injury that required surgery in July. He hit .258 with 13 doubles, five homers and 37 RBIs. He also started at first base 18 times when Joey Votto was sidelined. |

Bailey, a Staten Island native, went 6-3 with a team-best 1.84 ERA and converted 26 of 30 saves. |
